Medicci was the winning project of the eighth edition of Innomakers4Health for developing an artificial intelligence copilot designed to assist healthcare professionals during outpatient consultations. The hackathon, organized by Wayra, Telefónica’s corporate venture capital arm, Pfizer, and the Pfizer Foundation, in collaboration with the Hospital Universitario de La Princesa, took place on October 23rd and 24th at 42 Madrid Fundación Telefónica.

The tool is based on a local artificial intelligence model that acts as a physician’s copilot during consultations, simplifying information from medical records in seconds by generating summaries. Its goal is to make these documents easier to read and evaluate, streamline the work of healthcare professionals, and help free up more time for patient care, thereby improving the patient experience.

The initiative has brought together more than 100 participants, organized into 21 teams, who have worked on technological proposals to reduce administrative tasks and improve processes in hospital outpatient clinics, with the goal of freeing up clinical time and optimizing the experience for both patients and healthcare professionals.

As a new feature, this edition included the collaboration of the Hospital Universitario de La Princesa in Madrid, which took part in defining the challenge; its professionals also worked alongside the teams, providing guidance to help shape their ideas for potential application within a clinical setting.

“Innovating in healthcare requires a thorough understanding of the needs we aim to address. Thanks to the professionals at the Hospital Universitario de La Princesa, participants have been able to gain insight into the reality of outpatient care, better grasp the associated needs, and resolve questions that arose while developing their proposals by consulting directly with healthcare staff. This is the true value of Innomakers4Health: connecting talented individuals with a drive to innovate to those who know the challenges of clinical practice firsthand.”, notes Sergio Rodríguez, president of the Pfizer Foundation, who adds: “At the Pfizer Foundation, we will continue to serve as a bridge between ideas and the reality of healthcare, facilitating connections between innovative people and projects and the entities and professionals who can help move them forward.”

In this regard, Marcos Hernández Pereña, Medical Director of the Hospital Universitario de La Princesa, states: “To transform a hospital, we need to combine our own experience with insights from other disciplines and be willing to re-examine how we do things. Outpatient consultations represent one of our major clinical processes, and we want to use this meeting to rethink them alongside people who can offer perspectives different from our own. We are looking for ideas that will help us better organize care, reduce the administrative burden, and reclaim more time for patient care.”

Over the course of the two days, participants worked on defining, developing, and validating their proposals with the support of mentors from the hospital and Pfizer. The event included sessions on prototyping and preparing presentations, and culminated in pitches from all the teams, who presented their projects to a jury tasked with selecting the winner.

“For Wayra, the value of Innomakers4Health lies in connecting entrepreneurial talent with needs identified by healthcare professionals themselves. It is not just about rewarding an idea, but about supporting the winning team so they can explore its viability and continue developing it beyond the hackathon. Through initiatives like this, we also contribute to Telefónica’s purpose of being the best gateway for citizens and businesses to access digital technologies,” says Agustín Moro, Director of Innovation Services and Partnerships at Wayra.

The winners have received a cash prize of 3,000 euros and will also have the opportunity to accelerate their project at InnomakersLAB—a hub created by Pfizer in collaboration with Wayra—which includes six months of mentorship. This support is intended to help the project continue beyond the hackathon, with the potential for a subsequent pilot program at the Hospital Universitario de La Princesa in Madrid. Furthermore, thanks to the Pfizer Foundation, the winners will be eligible to participate in the selection process for a two-week stay as part of the Richi LifeSciences program, run by the Richi Foundation in Boston.
