Wayra invests in LuxQuanta to lead the future of secure communications in the quantum age

Madrid, October 15, 2025.- Wayra, Telefónica's corporate venture capital arm, invests in LuxQuanta, the deeptech company specializing in quantum cybersecurity, as part of an €8 million investment round that also includes other investors such as Big Sur Ventures, A&AG, GMV, the European Innovation Council (EIC), Corning, and GTD. With this step, Wayra reinforces the ecosystem's confidence in the potential of Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) technology and in LuxQuanta's role as a European leader in quantum cybersecurity. LuxQuanta was founded in 2021 after more than three years of research at the Institute of Photonic Sciences (ICFO) laboratory. Its founders – Sebastián Etcheverry, Saeed Ghasemi, and Valerio Pruneri – incubated a highly specialized technology that, just two years after the company's founding and with the help of its CEO, Vanesa Díaz, became a commercial product with global deployment potential: Continuous Variable Key Quantum Distribution (CV-QKD), a solution to protect communication networks against the risks posed by quantum computing. Since then, the company has launched two generations of its flagship product, NOVA LQ®, and has consolidated its presence in more than ten European countries. It has also deployed systems for strategic sectors such as government, telecommunications, data centers, and banking. Telefónica has been a strategic partner from the beginning, collaborating on joint innovation projects and investing in LuxQuanta's technology to drive secure networks globally. This new investment round aims to scale production, boost R&D in integrated photonics, strengthen the technical and sales teams, and advance international expansion. Integrated photonics, currently under development by LuxQuanta's R&D team, is a key technology for enabling mass deployment and reducing costs, which will make it easier for their solutions to reach more sectors and regions. “For more than a decade, Telefónica has been a pioneer in quantum communications, and our partnership with LuxQuanta is driving the transformation of the sector,” says Paloma Castellano, Managing Director of Wayra Spain. “This funding accelerates the deployment of CV-QKD solutions, improving the security of our clients and strengthening Europe’s technological sovereignty,” she adds.

“This round is a resounding validation of our vision: to protect global communications in the quantum age,” says Vanesa Díaz, CEO of LuxQuanta. “Thanks to this support, we will be able to scale our operations, strengthen our technology, and expand our international presence. The journey toward quantum-secure networks begins now, and we want to make it accessible and reliable for organizations worldwide,” she continues.

With this new stage, LuxQuanta consolidates its transition from startup to technological scale-up, ready to lead the massive deployment of quantum cybersecurity infrastructures worldwide.
