Champion Games, a pioneering video game studio in the virtual sports world, is the creator of MetaSoccer, the world's first football metaverse based on blockchain technology. Through this investment, Wayra reinforces its commitment to startups, building innovative proposals in the new era of Web3. Barcelona, October 5, 2022. Wayra, Telefónica's open innovation initiative, invests in Champion Games. The Barcelona-based video game studio has created MetaSoccer, the world's first football metaverse where you can manage your own club and generate income while playing. The game is aimed at both play-and-earn players and football fans interested in entering the metaverse and web3 gaming. It consists of a type of online game that allows players to earn rewards, with real-world value, by playing against other players and progressing through the game. These rewards come in the form of in-game assets, such as cryptocurrencies or NFTs, including virtual stadiums and sports kits, among others. All these actions are recorded on the blockchain, a public database on the internet. “For us, it is a privilege to have Wayra as an investor in our company. We hope that all their knowledge and experience in the field of telecommunications and innovation can help us consolidate our business,” says Marc Cercós, CEO and co-founder of Champion Games, creators of MetaSoccer. In 2021, Champion Gamers secured a €2 million funding round with investors including Play Ventures, ParaFI Capital, Defiance Capital, and DAO Maker, among others. The goal of the round was to lay the groundwork for creating the first sports metaverse with a new generation of digitally native football players and clubs in MetaSoccer, which in the coming years will reach valuations similar to those of professional football leagues.
To achieve this, they are investing in hiring professionals specializing in Go, React, and on-chain Solidity technologies, and are also strengthening their marketing efforts to increase the project's visibility. They have already secured the support of major players like Ronaldinho and Dani Carvajal, and clubs like Vasco da Gama.
“Play-and-earn is creating a new paradigm in the gaming industry. The use of decentralized technologies opens up a new world of opportunities that will revolutionize the industry. Champion Games is riding this wave and creating a Web3 game that can reach a mainstream audience. We are delighted to support this team of highly skilled professionals and are confident that Telefónica and Movistar can open up opportunities for collaboration with great potential,” says Marta Antúnez, director of Wayra Barcelona. A few months ago, Wayra launched the global Open2metaverse call for companies developing technology for the metaverse. 135 startups joined, and 1,625 startups from around the world were analyzed. Telefónica also organized the Metaverse Day on September 29th, where Champion Games was presented as one of the Web3 startups the company is supporting. About Champion Games: Champion Games is the first independent Web3 gaming studio in Spain, co-founded in Barcelona by Marc Cercós. They created the world's first football metaverse, built on blockchain. Game users can not only manage their club, create and train their team, but also win while having fun as football managers. Users can compete against computers or other players with their NFT players in MetaSoccer's Player vs. Environment mode. Users can join and compete in as many friendly matches as they like, receiving rewards for winning. The project's long-term goal is to create an ecosystem where players generate the same revenue as a real-world professional team through championship prizes, sponsorships, match streaming, and digital merchandising, among other business lines.
